About us

History and Aim of the Society
This society is for both orthopedic surgeons, neurosurgeons and non-physicians who are deeply interested in surgery for spine and spinal nerves.
It was founded on 6 Dec.93. as the society to study the surgical technique of the spine and spinal nerves on 6 Dec.1993. Founders as listed below were orthopedic surgeons specialized in spine surgery. The first annual meeting was held at Shinjuku, Tokyo on 6 Oct.94. The first neurosurgeon who became president was at the 6th annual meeting in 1999, when the society was renamed the Japan Society for the Study of Surgical Technique for the Spine and Spinal Nerves (JPSSSTSS) and the society started to publish the annual journal of JPSSSTSS. The pedicle screwing seminar of JPSSSTSS started once a year in 1995, where participants were allowed to observe surgical technique of pedicle screwing in the operative field.
Spine and spinal nerves are anatomically in close relationship. The medical field concerning spine and spinal nerves is wide and full of variety, covered by both orthopedic field and neurosurgical field but treatments of disorders and functional insufficiency of spine and spinal nerves have been dealt with separately either by orthopedic surgeons or by neurosurgeons. Therefore it is naturally thought both academic and practical interactions are mandatory between both fields to improve and help patients. Organized interactions between both fields, however have never been observed in the world medical field. This society was founded to offer a place for interactions between orthopedic and neurosurgeons by exchanging ideas ,knowledge and surgical technique about the spine and spinal nerves. At the same time as being an international society both the academic and the practical level of the society should be up to date and as high as the world level. The members should act on their own responsibility and should be free of special organization or old tradition.
This society may show the possibility that the medical field of spine and spinal nerves will be recognized as a special field independent from both the orthopedic and the neurosurgical field.
